Unfortunately, while many people are aware of the dangers and potential consequences associated with driving under the influence (DUI/DWAI), many remain painfully unaware of the dangers and consequences associated with driving while under the influence of drugs (DUID).
That is precisely why The Office of National Drug Control Policy recently announced the launch of a new public awareness campaign designed to alert motorists to the perils of driving while under the influence of either prescription drugs or over-the-counter drugs.
According to National Drug Control Policy Director Gil Kerlikowske, motorists need to be aware that "drugs adversely affect driver judgment, driver reaction time, their motor skills and their memory." He also pointed out that driving under the influence of drugs is not just confined to those who abuse illegal substances such as marijuana, ecstasy or cocaine (to name only a few), but can also include those who are taking legal drugs for legitimate purposes.
At the Tuesday press conference, Kerlikowske also highlighted the need for increased training among law enforcement officials. Such training, he argued, would enable law enforcement officials to identify and arrest motorists driving under the influence of drugs on a far more regular basis.
Lastly, Kerlikowske addressed the relative dearth of laws designed to combat driving under the influence of drugs as compared with laws designed to combat driving while intoxicated (DWI/DWAI).
"Too often, inadequate drugged driving laws allow people who drive after taking drugs to evade prosecution and avoid responsibility," said Kerlikowske.
The National Drug Control Policy Director was joined at the press conference by Cathy Lanier, Chief of the Metropolitan (Washington) Police Department, David Strickland, head of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and Sarah Fisher, a professional Indy car driver.
