Colorado State Patrol troopers called off a high-speed pursuit Sunday night after the truck driver tried to run troopers off Highway 65. The chase originated in Clifton and was suspended after 20 minutes, roughly 8:30am. If the driver had succeeded in running a patrol car off the road and killed an officer, or if the chase had been allowed by officers to continue and the driver had killed another innocent person on the road, the fleeing suspect could have been charged with vehicular homicide.

Montrose State Patrol dispatchers report the pursuit began at the intersection of 33 Road and U.S. highway 6 after the driver narrowly missed hitting a trooper's squad car with his white Chevrolet S10 pickup truck. When the officer attempted to pull the truck over, the driver instead picked up speed and headed east to Interstate 70 by way of Palisade, later exiting to Highway 65 via the interchange exit.

Police reported the truck as driving on the shoulder of the highway at times during the chase. Mesa County Sheriff deputies assisted in the pursuit before it was called off. The driver remains at large. If apprehended, Colorado State Patrol could press charges that include attempted vehicular homicide.
