Earlier this month, a New York City man was charged with a litany of drunk driving-related charges - including vehicular homicide - following a tragic accident involving dump trucks and drug racing.
According to law enforcement reports, 84-year-old Lucille J. and 86-year old Myron J. were traveling on a busy thoroughfare in Nassau County, New York, when a landscaping dump drunk driven by 32-year-old Edward N. veered into their lane, causing a head-on collision.
Tragically, Myron J. was killed in the accident, while his wife, Lucille J., suffered life-threatening injuries, including multiple broken bones.
Edward N. was determined by law enforcement officials to be under the influence of alcohol - a bottle of vodka was retrieved from his truck - and subsequently placed under arrest.
What made this tragic accident garner headlines across the nation was the somewhat strange circumstances under which it occurred.
Law enforcement officials believe that Edward N. and another person were both driving landscaping dump drunks and were stopped next to one another at a red light. When the light eventually turned green, both drivers slammed on their accelerators, a clear indication of a drag race.
Soon afterward, Edward N. lost control of the dump truck, causing the head-on collision. Law enforcement officials have not yet located the driver of the other dump truck who left the scene.
"When the light turned green, a witness says, both trucks took off at an accelerated rate of speed. He described it as drag racing," said Lt. Kevin Smith of the Nassau County Police Department.
Edward N. has since been charged with aggravated vehicular homicide, manslaughter, driving under the influence and reckless driving. It is worth noting that his license had been suspended for 90 days last year for a DUI.
This blog will periodically offer posts that communicate significant developments or interesting stories in the area of DUI/DWAI.
An arrest and conviction for driving under the influence can have a serious impact on your life. It can result in a lengthy license suspension or even revocation. You may also be required to use a vehicle ignition interlock device (IID) in order to drive. If your job depends on maintaining a clean driving record or a commercial driver's license, you may find yourself out of work and unable to support yourself and your family.
For these and many other reasons, it is extremely important to speak with an experienced Colorado attorney if you have been arrested for drunk driving.
