Parents all across the country are expressing their collective outrage over marijuana-shaped candy now being sold in many local malls and novelty shops. According to many of these parents, the candy not only sets a bad example for kids but also promotes illegal drug use.

The candy, made by novelty-gift company Kalan LP, comes in three varieties -- sour gummy candy, lollipops and so-called "ring pots." Each variety consists of green candy in the shape of a marijuana leaf.

The green packing of the candy is adorned with drawings of pot leaves, a cloud of smoke drawn around the product name, and the phrases "Legalize" and "Hey man, pass the bag!" in large capital yellow letters. In addition, a cartoon drawing of a man smoking a joint, wearing a headband decorated with a pot leaf and flashing a peace sign can be found on the packaging.

Andrew Kalan, the president of the company, recently informed a news outlet, "We developed the marijuana-shaped candy as a response to the growing movement among adults in the U.S. towards legalization. As a company, we do not take political sides; our goal is merely to capitalize on what we see in the marketplace."

The candy is currently sold in 1,000 stores across the country for about $1 to $2 per bag. Nothing in the sour-apple-flavored candy is illegal, but that doesn't mollify parents who would like to see the candy banned altogether.

"I think they should just stop making it, stop distributing it, stop selling it," said one concerned mother.

It should be interesting to see if this becomes more of an issue as Halloween draws ever closer ...
