Whenever a celebrity is arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI first offense, felony DUI, etc.), it is bound to make the news almost immediately in today's connected world. Unfortunately, it sometimes doesn't always seem to matter whether the person actually committed the offense, as many publications will simply jump to perhaps unfair conclusions.

To illustrate, consider a recent story out of Michigan, where 26-year-old Rima Fakih -- the first Arabic woman ever to be crowned Miss USA back in 2010 -- was arrested and charged with misdemeanor drunk driving this past weekend.

While many publications/outlets have been quick to label Fakih as guilty of drunk driving, her DUI defense attorney has come forward to offer an explanation clarifying what actually happened.

According to Fakih's attorney, she and a friend were enjoying an evening out this past Saturday and were ready to head home. At this time, Fakih made the decision to drive her friend's car, acting as a designated driver.

Fakih proceeded to drive a short distance before reaching the realization that she was also too intoxicated to drive. She then attempted to pull the car over to the curb but was spotted by Highland Park police at this time.

While official details of the DUI arrest -- including the results of a blood alcohol content (BAC) test -- have yet to be released, Fakih's attorney has already indicated that she is remorseful for her actions.

"She is taking full responsibility," he said. "She wants to apologize to everybody she let down."

Interestingly, Fakih's Twitter and Facebook page both had posts in the immediate aftermath of the arrest stating that it was another Fakih who had been taken into custody. However, these posts were later taken down.

Fakih's attorney indicated that the confusing messages had been posted by other people with access to her accounts.

Stay tuned for updates on this story from our Denver DUI/DWAI blog ...

Remember, mistakes happen. Whether you have been arrested for DUI first offense or felony DUI, it is extremely important to speak with an experienced Colorado attorney.
