The figures regarding the total number of DUI/DWAI arrests made over the course of the Super Bowl weekend are finally in and they once again appear to show that many football fans chose to heed the warnings of Colorado's law enforcement agencies.

According to the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and the Colorado State Patrol, there were exactly 274 DUI arrests made by 66 different law enforcement agencies this Super Bowl weekend (Feb. 3 to Feb. 6). This represents another sizeable drop, as there were 303 DUI arrests over the 2011 Super Bowl weekend, and 371 DUI arrests over the 2010 Super Bowl weekend.

Breaking the numbers down, CDOT determined the following:

  • Of the 274 DUI arrests over the 2012 Super Bowl weekend, approximately 125 of them took place on Super Bowl Sunday
  • There were no DUI-related fatalities over the 2012 Super Bowl weekend

Interestingly, authorities attribute these figures to the February 3 snowstorm that pummeled most of Colorado. Specifically, it caused more people to simply stay at home rather than venturing out to bars or parties.

"The numbers were down overall, but we still saw the biggest number of arrests on Super Bowl Sunday," said Col. James Wolfinbarger, Chief of the Colorado State Patrol. "Even though we urged people to plan ahead, at least 274 drivers still didn't get the message. Now they are facing fines and costs totaling $10,270."

With the holidays and the Super Bowl behind us, it's highly likely that the next period of increased DUI enforcement will be around the St. Patrick's Day holiday.

Remember, mistakes happen. It is extremely important to speak with an experienced Colorado attorney if you have been arrested for drunk driving.
